CHAPTER 12

Luke could feel the air shifting, even as he tried to ignore it. Shaw was being strange again, had treated him coldly then warmly again, and seemed like he was shutting down. He was starting to cut Luke out again, even if he still smiled and sucked his cock and held him at night after they both came. It was always going to be temporary, Luke told himself. Christmas was over. New Year's was a few days away. He had to be back home soon. All of this he knew, even if he didn't want it to be true.

All that Luke could think about was how he could convince Shaw to return to California, then maybe they could keep rebuilding their friendship and maybe more. Luke would settle for a night here, a lunch there. He would settle for anything as long as he could have Shaw in his life again. His time was running out, though, and he didn't know how to broach the subject. Being with Shaw was like navigating a long and winding river. Calm and smooth water could turn into raging rapids and rip his heart to shreds in a matter of minutes. And Shaw wouldn't even know he was doing it. He had a special ability to cut Luke down with a dismissive word or a look. It was a skill.

If Luke had any pride at all, he would take matters into his own hands. Make a flight reservation and let Shaw follow him for once. Play hard to get and show who was really in control. But Luke was weak. He didn't want to leave any sooner than he had to. He would rather take any last few hours with Shaw than salvage the last little shreds of his dignity. He would worry about his dignity when he got back to L.A.

Shaw moaned in his sleep and tightened his arm around Luke's waist. They were in Luke's bed after Luke had pulled Shaw into it the night before as they reached the top of the stairs. As they were already ripping each other's clothes off, Luke had deemed Shaw's room too far away. And maybe Luke had wanted to force Shaw out of his comfort zone and into his. Luke figured a new bed would bring a new attitude, and it'd worked. Shaw had been teasing and submissive, egging Luke on as he took and took and took until both of them collapsed with exhaustion. The awkwardness of the night before wasn't forgotten but it wasn't so present, either.

Luke watched Shaw as he slept and tried to memorize everything. Shaw's warm weight against him, the way his stubble looked so harsh against his smooth skin, the way his unwashed hair suck up in places. Occasionally Shaw would murmur something incoherent and press his face more into his pillow. Luke thought it was fucking adorable. Luke also thought he was definitely, completely, and thoroughly fucked because he was more in love with Shaw than ever before.
